Toby has been researching the ‘drug problem’ for over 15 years. His first research position was at the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence (now DrugScope) and for 10 years he worked in a range of voluntary sector organisations, including Nacro and Revolving Doors Agency. In 2004, he moved to academia, first at the University of Leeds, and in 2006 to his current post as Senior Research Fellow in the School of Law at the University of Manchester. He is the co-founder and Director of the Regulation, Security and Justice Research Centre, based in the Manchester Law School. His current research interests in the field are primarily focused on drugs, crime and criminal justice and he is directing a major ESRC-funded project on the Drug Interventions Programme. He is also writing a book with the working title ‘A History of Drugs: Drugs and freedom in the liberal age’.
