Tim Leighton is Director of the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies at Action on Addiction whose vision is to ‘free people from addiction and its effects’. Tim Leighton is Director of the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies at Action on Addiction whose vision is to ‘free people from addiction and its effects’. Action on Addiction offers research, treatment, family support, education and training. Tim has been involved in a number of recent national initiatives including the NICE Psychosocial Guideline Development Group, the UK Drug Policy Commission Recovery Consensus Group.

In the past year, Tim has spoken at the Conference Consortium’s Great Debate in Manchester, The FDAP relapse prevention event, The NTA Drug Strategy Conference. He delivered a presentation at the last ‘Unhooked Thinking’ Conference: ‘Half in love with easeful death’ about 19th century romantic views of drug use and addiction and their echoes in contemporary culture, and at the New Directions in the Study of Alcohol Group’s annual conference 2008 his talk was called ‘Three Wise Men’ about the professional mentors who had inspired his own work.

His main interests in the Drug/Alcohol field are: Finding ways to minimise ideological and political splits which do not best serve those adversely affected by substance misuse;Researching and encouraging grassroots community action, including mutual-help groups and societies;Improving the training and professional education of drug and alcohol workers, particularly counsellors.
